Darondo RIP

Darondo, a Bay Area soul singer sadly passed away last night. Born William Daron Pulliam, but perfromed under the name Darondo, he never really became a household name during his lifetime, yet was highly regarded as an influential figure in the soul / funk scene.

Hot Pepper: The Life and Music of Clifton Chenier - by Les Blank

Acclaimed documentary filmmaker Les Blank sadly passed last month at the age of 77. Famous for exploring the margins of American music, he totted up over 40 films during his career. Perhaps most famously documenting the life and times of Dizzy Gillespie and Lightnin' Hopkins, opting for intimate, rounded portraits of his subjects rather than linear histories.

The Photography Of Joseph Szabo

Here is a collection of black and white photographs taken by Joseph Szabo, perhaps best known for his iconic image of a young girl smoking on the beach which was later used as the front cover for Dinosaur Jr's 'Green Mind' album. Most of his subjects are american teens and he possesses the charming ability of highlighting and celebrating the undeniable awkwardness of adolescence in many of his shots.

London In 1927

Here is some incredible colour footage of London, shot in 1927. Filmed by an early British pioneer of film, Claude Frisse-Greene made a number of travelogues using the colour process his father William - a noted cinematographer - was experimenting with.
