VH1 Rock Docs - N.W.A. The World's Most Dangerous Group

Posted by Calum Sager on 26 October 2012

Another documentary taken from the brilliant VH1 Rock Docs series. This one focuses on 'the world's most dangerous group', N.W.A. The story is one of five childhood friends from Compton who gave a voice to a section of society on the verge of exploding in the late-80s. The young men told the story of a city torn by drugs and violence and catapulted themselves to success by doing so. Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, Ice-Cube, MC Ren and DJ Yella together caused controversy everywhere they went, exposing police brutality and social injustices they had experienced growing up in their district of California. With little to no radio play, their debut offering 'Straight Outta Compton' totted up a million sales in its first year of release. As you would expect the story is awash with drugs, sex, violence, friends becoming foes, death and generally more drama than you would expect from any other 5 piece. But perhaps the key strength of this documentary is its exploration of N.W.A.'s social significance and their ties to key historic events that transpired in this turbulent era. One interviewee suggests that the group had more social and political significance than Public Enemy that came before them. With interviews from the likes of Ice Cube, DJ Yella, Eazy-E’s widow Tamika Wright, former manager Jerry Heller, Ice-T, and director John Singleton and commentary from Chris Rock the documentary makes for gripping viewing, even if your not a fan of the group. As for those that think they already know the story, chances are you probably don't.
