'Spitalfields Life' is a collection of one hundred and fifty favourite stories by The Gentle Author published as a handsome illustrated 450 page hardback. Over the past couple of years, The Gentle Author has consistently written a blog post a day about the denizens of his chosen home on his much loved site Spitalfields Life. Now, this new book compiles over 100 of the very best articles taken from the site. Most of the Gentle Author’s pen portraits are of street life, street art, markets, diverse food, immigrant culture, ancient houses and history, pageants and parades, rituals and customs, traditional trades and old family businesses. However, 'Spitalfields Life' is much more than a collection of local characters. It also invites musings about the changing identity of the area, and particularly the commercial make-up of Spitalfields. The book also features a wealth of new illustrations by Mark Hearld, Lucinda Rogers and Rob Ryan.
