As part of BBC Radio 1Xtra’s ‘Gone Too Soon’ series, XL head honcho Richard Russell sat down to discuss the life and work of Gil Scott-Heron with Benji B. Just this week it was reported that XL Recordings’ profits increased tenfold to £41.7m last year, and the man at the helm of this empire was also one of the last people to spend time with the late, great GIl Scott-Heron. The pair collaborated on Gil's last album before his tragic death, the brilliant 'I'm New Here'. In this twenty minute discussion, Richard Russell and radio host / promoter Benji B converse, in depth about their experiences with Gil in person, the influence of his work and his legacy. A very passionate and illuminating discussion in memory of one of the most important and influential lyricists of our era.
