Posted by Calum Sager on 1 August 2012

Chris Marker (29 July 1921 – 30 July 2012) was a French writer, photographer, documentary film director, multimedia artist and film essayist. Marker became known internationally for the short film 'La Jetée' (The Pier) in 1962. His other career highlights include 'A Grin Without a Cat' (1977), 'Sans Soleil' (1983) and 'AK' (1985), an essay film on the Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa. Film theorist Roy Armes has said of him: "Marker is unclassifiable because he is unique..." A true great, whose influence will continue to be felt in his absence.
